Healing Ancestral Trauma: Feeling the Past to Free the Future

Jul 14th, 2019 - Jul 20th, 2019

"If I learn to love where I come from, I will learn to love where I'm going."

-Thomas Huebl, Academy of Inner Science

The stories of our ancestors are part of who we are today. The past is not behind us; it’s alive in us now, moment to moment. Our bodies store the residues of what gets passed down from one generation to the next. Traumatic historical and collective events, such as wars, the Holocaust, slavery, the genocide of Native Americans, the loss of homeland through the immigrant experience, the Depression, and many others, are carried across generations. To what degree are we aware of the impact of transgenerational trauma on our present day existence? To what degree does our behavior reflect some trauma or dysfunction out of our past?

Intergenerational trauma has been verified and validated by the field of epigenetics. The question becomes: How do we uncover it, engage with it, and heal it? And why?

Who This Program Is For

We invite all those who seek some kind of reconciliation with their past and the lineage they inherited. The intention of this program is to restore wholeness by providing an opportunity to consciously explore how the shadows of the past are impacting us today. We cannot heal what we are unable to see or feel. Through awareness and the courage to face the past, we can bring light to any shame, fear, mistrust, numbness, grief, and other feelings that perhaps lie dormant from “looking away.”

When we integrate something from our past, we make space for new possibilities in our future. When we do this within the context of immersion in wild nature, within community, and within sacred ceremony, we amplify both our access to ancestral trauma and our innate capacities to transform and transcend it. We do this for ourselves personally as well as for our families, our loved ones, and the greater culture we live in. We invite you to join us if you have the curiosity and the commitment to undertake such a journey.

You will be well-supported by your experienced guides, who are longtime facilitators of deep process work, and by the carefully created structure of the program itself. For eons, ceremony in the natural world has held and guided people in times of loss and confusion into renewal. Together we can open the door to transformative insights and turn our pain into an awareness of new strengths, gifts, and grace – even gratitude.

Program Overview

The format of the 7-day program is spacious, to allow for delicate insights to emerge. We will hold base camp among ponderosa pines and aspen trees on private land in south central Colorado, a valley with high ridges, National Forest all around, and grand vistas. We will enjoy pure spring waters, a perennial stream, and precious privacy. Our mornings are spent in circle, sharing stories and exploring an ancient means of looking into the mirror of nature (the Four Shields). In the afternoons contemplative walks and time alone on the earth will inform our process. A 24-hour solo with fasting (optional) begins on the morning of day 5. Individual modifications to the solo can be made based on medical and personal needs. A note to people with limited wilderness experience: Although we will be camping out for the duration of the program, activities undertaken will be non-strenuous, and our emphasis will always be “safety first.”

What this program provides

This program provides an opportunity to transform the energy of trauma we have inherited.  In our experience, by feeling our past, we hold the potential to free our future. Getting into right relationship with our ancestors is essential to finding our place in the stream of life. Our roots are channels for not only the traumas and wounds of our ancestors, but also their resources and wisdom. We invite you to join this rite of renewal and restoration to wholeness.
